My research examines mating call behavior in male gray tree frogs. I am trying to determine why some males give longer calls, which are more attractive to females, than others. I examined male calling behavior in natural competitive groups and simulated competitive interactions in order to determine whether body condition is responsible for the ability of some males to give more attractive calls than others in a competitive situation. This information is important not only to aid in our understanding of animal social and sexual behavior, but also could present a potential consequence of environmental degradation on a population’s ability to mate successfully.
