Title: Analysis of genes directing midline nervous system development in mutant Drosophila melanogaster

(Advisor: Stephen Crews)

Kristin Benjamin

My project involves working with certain mutated strains of fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster. The strains have a defect in one of two genes involved in the development of the nervous system.  The two functional genes are known to be involved in regulating transcription of DNA to RNA, and act by coming together to form a dimer and then attaching to the DNA. By studying mutant strains and the mutant proteins they make, I hope to learn more about the mutants themselves but also gain a larger overall understanding of exactly how these two proteins should function normally to help with healthy development of the Drosophila nervous system
