Title: The Effects of Lysolipids on Vascular Cells

(Advisor: Dr. Susan Smyth - Sponsor: Dr. Victoria Bautch)

Katie Vogeler

The goal of my research is to elucidate the role of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a lysolipid, in vascular cell function. This is being accomplished by examining how LPA effects cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. Compounds designed to be synthetic analogs of LPA are also being tested to understand how LPA works on a molecular level. The physiological response to LPA is being examined in knockout mice deficient in two LPA receptors. Results from this work will lead to a better understanding of platelet aggregation which can lead to cardiovascular diseases
