Title: Gene Expression in Proteolipid Protein Knockout Mice

(Advisor: Dr. Pierre Morell - Sponsor: Dr. Jason Reed)

Lindsay Lewellyn

I have been studying the development of a Proteolipid Protein (PLP) knockout mouse. PLP is a major component of the insulating myelin sheath in the brain, and its presence and function have been conserved throughout evolution. Despite the loss of this major protein, the PLP knockout mice appear normal, so I am trying to determine what molecular mechanisms are compensating for this loss by analyzing the expression of around 12,000 genes over a developmental time course. This information could be potentially significant, since there are a number of human diseases corresponding to the over expression or under expression of PLP.
