Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), plasminogen activator inhibitor-3 or protein C inhibitor (PAI-3 or PCI), and maspin are several serine protease inhibitors (or “serpins”) to be studied because of their role as ideal targets for biological therapies in cancers.  Immunohistochemical study of normal ovary and malignant ovarian cancer tissues can specifically mark for these proteins and demonstrate the changes in protein concentration between normal and malignant tissue.  The differences in immunohistochemical staining may serve as a diagnostic tool to better predict stage and severity of ovarian cancer.
