Title: The integrin aPS3 subunit encoded by scab is required for Drosophila dorsal closure, but does not regulate Jun-N-terminal kinase.

My project seeks to understand the contribution of the Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway and the integrin a-subunit Scab to the process of dorsal closure during Drosophila development.  During dorsal closure, two sheets of lateral epithelial cells migrate towards the dorsal midline of the embryo where they meet and fuse.  Loss-of-function mutations in scab or JNK pathway members cause dorsal closure defects and embryonic lethality.  Studying dorsal closure can provide us with knowledge about how organisms coordinate and regulate complex tissue movements, serving as a model for such clinically relevant processes as wound healing, as well as providing insight into integrin function.
