Title: Repopulation of Damaged Liver Following Transplantation of Hepatic Progenitor Cells (Advisor: Dr. David Gerber - Sponsor: Dr. Steve Matson - Mentor: Dr. Brian Clark)
Cell transplantation has been proposed as an alternative to whole organ transplant in patients with acquired and inherited liver diseases. My research examines the ability of the hepatic progenitor cell, a subset of liver stem cell, to repopulate damaged liver after transplantation. The hepatic progenitor cell is an ideal candidate for transplantation because it has a high ability to proliferate and to become a mature hepatocyte, which makes up the majority of liver tissue. My research has the potential to be of clinical importance because cell transplantation may circumvent some of the traditional problems with organ transplants such as donor shortages, immunosuppression, and high invasiveness to the patient. |
