Graduate Student Sponsored Seminar Series

Each year the BGSA will sponsor 2 department seminars.  The speakers will be nominated and elected by the graduate student body.

Helen P. Mangelsdorf Distinguished Lecture Series

Dr. Paul C. Mangelsdorf was a well respected Harvard botanist and National Academy of Science member who studied the genetics and evolution of corn. Dr. Mangelsdorf retired from Harvard and moved to Chapel Hill where he accepted an emeritus position in the department of biology at UNC. Dr. Mangelsdorf provided an endowment, in memory of his wife Helen, for a student-administered lecture series in the department of biology. Thus, the Helen P. Mangelsdorf Distinguished Lecture Series was established.

In establishing the endowment, Dr. Mangelsdorf provided the biology graduate students with the opportunity to invite distinguished scientists to speak at UNC. Invited speakers receive a small honorarium and are encouraged to give two lectures: a public lecture of interest to a broad audience and a more specialized biology department seminar.

The biology graduate student population nominates the Lecturer each year.

Former Speakers include:

Dr. Steven Benner (2005)
Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida
The Benner laboratory is an originator of the field of "synthetic biology", which seeks to generate, by chemical synthesis, molecules that reproduce the complex behavior of living systems, including their genetics, inheritance, and evolution.

Dead Bird Room Memorial Lecture Series

The BGSA decided to establish another graduate student sponsored seminar series because of the diverse interests of the department and to honor the Dead Bird Room, as the title implies.  In Old Wilson, before the renovations, there were several display cases with taxonomic specimens.  It is unclear what members of this collection will return after renovations, but it was a much-loved room and the BGSA wished to immortalize in the form of a seminar series.
This provides the biology graduate students yet another opportunity to invite distinguished scientists to speak at UNC. Invited speakers receive a small honorarium and are encouraged to give two lectures: a public lecture of interest to a broad audience and a more specialized biology department seminar.

The biology graduate student population nominates the Lecturer each year.
