1982. Established the Vegetation Section of The Ecological Society of America

1982. Established the North American Chapter of the International Association for Vegetation Science

1983. Established the International Association for Vegetation Science, North American Chapter Annual Field Conference Program.

1986. Chaired a committee that reviewed and proposed major revisions in the Awards Program of the Ecological Society of America.

1988-. Established and continue to coordinate the Carolina Vegetation Survey, an 18-year old multi-institution and agency collaboration dedicated to documentation of the natural vegetation of the Carolinas.

1990. Established (in collaboration with E. van der Maarel) the Journal of Vegetation Science, the official organ of the International Association for Vegetation Science. (Van der Maarel and I served as Co-Editors-in-Chief from inception in 1990 until I took over the journals of the Ecological Society of America in 1996.)

1993. Proposed and co-organized the Ecological Society Vegetation Panel to provide professional oversight, review, evaluation and standardization of vegetation classifications used in North America by federal agencies, conservation organizations and academic organizations. (I continue to serve on the Executive Committee of the Panel.)

1994. While Secretary of the Ecological Society of America, designed a major revision of the governing structures of the Society and wrote the new Constitution and Bylaws.

1995. Co-organized (with Paul Harcombe) an NSF-sponsored International Symposium and workshop on Large-scale mapping and classification of vegetation. Rice University.

1997. While Editor-in-Chief of Ecology and Ecological Monographs, designed and implemented Ecological Archives (http://www.esapubs.org/archive), a new digital publication of the Ecological Society of America for electronic appendices, supplements and data papers.

1997-. Developed copyright ownership and use policies for UNC, first as Chair of the Provost’s special Committee on Copyright, and then as Chair of the Subcommittee on Ownership Policy of the UNC System-wide Task Force on Intellectual Property.

1998-. Organizer and director of a collaborative program of the Ecological Society of America, the USGS-NBII, The Nature Conservancy, and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis to develop the information system and database architecture to support a US national vegetation plot database and a linked US national vegetation classification database.

2000-. Organized the historical records of the Ecological Society of America and posted them as a Society-sponsored website. (http://www.esapubs.org/esahistory).

2003-. Established and chair the EcoInformatics Working Group of the International Association for Vegetation Science. This group is working to establish international standards for exchange of vegetation and species co-occurrence data.
