Organization

1. Meeting time.

Wednesday, 11:00-12:30, Wilson 133

2. Organization.

We will work systematically through the Wilson and Agnew text, typically allocating two weeks for each chapter. Consult the class schedule for details.

3. Participating Faculty.

Robert Peet, 413 Coker Hall, 962-6942, peet@unc.edu
Peter White, 406 Coker Hall, 962-6939, peter.white@unc.edu

4. Weekly activity.

We will work in teams of two, where each team is responsible for a two-week analysis of each chapter. All class attendees will be expected to have read the chapter in question at the start of the two-week period. The leaders will first go through the main points of the chapter and relate them to conventional textbook treatments in terms of coverage and originality. They will provide discussion points and lead a discussion on the chapter. The discussion should include the logical flow of material, how the material might be presented in a class, and the evenness of coverage. This will be followed up during the second week, as time allows, with a more in-depth analysis of critical foundational literature, or new directions the field appears to be moving. One or two papers from the original literature should be assigned for this second discussion. Each team should, at least one week in advance, assign 1-2 required readings selected in consultation with Bob and provide digital copies for Dane to post on the class website. There should be roughly a 1:1 ratio of presentation to discussion. Immediately after the class period, the presenter should deliver his or her PowerPoint presentation and a digital copy of the handout to Dane for posting on the class webpage.

5. Products.

The presenter should also prepare a one-page class handout that summarizes the topic and lists critical references.

We will maintain a list of additional topics and papers we would like to have talked about, but which we did not get to.

6. Class emailing list.

The Email Address for this list is: Bio255@listserv.unc.edu, at least until I get around to changing it.
