Department of Biology Guidelines for Highest Honors, Honors, and Commendation in Biology

Honors in Biology is designated in baccalaureate degrees as a distinction bestowed on outstanding students who have demonstrated marked competence in overall biology course work and who have completed an independent research project of considerable merit. Normally it requires:

  1. a written thesis describing original research;
  2. a grade point average in biology courses of at least 3.40 at the end of the semester preceding the semester of graduation;
  3. oral defense before the Honors Committee.

Highest Honors in Biology is designated in baccalaureate degrees as a distinction bestowed on truly outstanding students who have excelled in course work and who have completed a research project of considerable depth and significance. Normally it requires:

  1. a written thesis describing original research;
  2. a grade point average in biology courses of at least a 3.85 at the end of the semester preceding the semester of graduation;
  3. oral defense before the Honors Committee;
  4. research results deemed publishable by the Honors Committee.

A Commendation for Undergraduate Research in Biology is awarded to graduating seniors who do not qualify for Honors or Highest Honors but have maintained strong academic records and have completed commendable research projects. Normally it requires:

  1. a written thesis describing original research;
  2. a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in biology courses;
  3. presentation of research and approval by the Honors Committee.
