The Department of Biology depends on the generous gifts of our friends, patrons and alumni to ensure the margin of excellence we enjoy. Private gifts from generous donors help to sustain the Department’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service. Such gifts help to provide the best possible education for our undergraduate and graduate students, build a lively intellectual community and support the cutting edge work of our faculty. 1. To make a gift to the Department of Biology online, using your credit card, you may go to The Arts & Sciences Foundation "Make a Gift Now" page. This is a secure site; your personal and credit card information will be encrypted, protected and kept strictly confidential.

2. Complete the requested information (name, address, etc.) and indicate the amount you would like to give. Your generosity, at any level of giving, is greatly appreciated.

3. In the section where you designate your gift, please indicate that your gift is intended for the Department of Biology. This will ensure that Biology benefits from your generosity.

Department of Biology Needs

With completion of the human genome sequence, the birth of genomics and the global crisis in biodiversity, the 21st century is the century of Biology. As we look to our future, we envision a department that maintains excellence, improves programs, and offers the best to our students and faculty.

The Undergraduate Research Program provides students with direct hands-on experience in the research laboratories of our faculty. Students are supported for a summer research experience with funds from private gifts.

The department is in need of additional Graduate Student Support to continue to recruit the best applicants into our programs. Private funds are used to provide small travel grants and research fellowships to our graduate students. These future scientists and college professors will continue the rich academic tradition we have come to expect.

There are four departmental lectureships supported by private donations – the Lawrence I. Gilbert lectureship, the Mangelsdorf lectureship, the Distinguished Lecture in Molecular Biology and the Distinguished Lecture in Organismal Biology. A gift to any one of these funds will help to bring an outstanding scientist to UNC-Chapel Hill for a stimulating lecture and discussions with the faculty and students.

We seek to establish faculty fellowships to be used to fund the cutting edge research done by faculty in the Department of Biology.
