Course Policies

General

We want each of you to do well, but to have this happen we need you to do your part. Please take advantage of all of the opportunities to learn and review the material. To facilitate this, attendance at all classes and recitations is essential. Your TA will be available during recitations to answer your questions about material covered in the lectures. Please come prepared to ask questions. If you have additional questions about the material, please do feel free to bring them to your TA or to the faculty member. Anyone who falls in the bottom 20% of the class on any exam is strongly encouraged to meet with the professor at the earliest possible time to plan how to improve your performance on the next exam.

If you do not understand a point in lecture, please feel free to interrupt by asking a question. Do not feel intimidated or embarrassed to ask questions! We are happy to stay at the end of class to answer questions. Anyone who wishes to tape record lectures is free to do so.

Grades

95% of your final grade will be determined by your performance on four exams, each given equal weight. 5% of your final grade will depend on satisfactory completion of problem sets, which are to be turned in at recitation. Each exam will cover only the material indicated; they are not cumulative (not even the final), except in that as you learn basic material, this will be important for your understanding of more advanced material later on in the course. For example, you will need to understand how cells work (first half of the course) in order to make sense of how they function in development (second half of course). Letter grades will not be assigned for individual exams, only points. Final letter grades will be assigned based on the total number of points for the entire semester. Exam questions will be taken from lectures and assigned readings. Exams must be taken on the dates indicated during the regular class period. Makeup exams will only be given in exceptional circumstances, i.e., medical or family emergency documented in writing; you must notify your professor of such an emergency before the time of the regular exam. The makeup exam may be an oral exam.

If your exam points were added incorrectly, please see your TA and we will be happy to make a correction. Any other requests for exam re-grading must be in the form of a written appeal turned in to your TA, justifying why your answer should be accepted, and if accepted, the entire exam may be re-graded. Since this may result in either raising or lowering your point total, we encourage you to petition for a regrade only if you have a strong justification for a regrade. No exam taken in pencil will be re-graded. All appeals for changes must be made within 7 calendar days after the exam is returned to the students.
